They are subtle, hang around crew quarters, and provide a tangible visual art theme on the Enterprise D and Voyager, for example: I thought that would be a nice #Warpcore DIY project to get that in-universe feeling for my own personal living space.
Painting my Round Canvas
I had been looking out for round canvasas for a while. There are some sources for them online but I wanted to see if I could get one locally. A week ago I got lucky at TK Maxx, so it was time to hit the art supply store to get the right paint for the look I wanted to achieve. My pla was leaning on the pastel-planet look, but giving it my own slightly more textured gritty look like a planet or moon.
To achieve that delicate, sheer pastel paint layer, I used a product called pouring medium for acrylic paints. It thins the color out when used generously with a smaller amount of pigmented paint and gives a nicer result that just diluting it with water. Also, I used a mix of silver metallic and white as primer, so that the whole painting would subtly pick up a pearly sheen. And then I put on layer after layer and hated the result.
Frustrated with my boring looking painting full of wet goo, I actually took the whole mushy affair into the bathroom and gave it a treatment with my shower. That produced a great “corrosion” effect to give me a basic structure to work with later.
That was a great decision, and I then let it dry a little before taking it back for further work. The second round was also too much paint, so more bathroom tools had to come to my creative rescue: This time I used my squeegee to take away larger layers of paint, thus revealing even more structured fun. I let that dry another time, and then I made the sheer paint mixture with blue and magenta pink. I applied it gently with a broad brush, and then I was at last finished. See the gorgeous result hanging on my wall.
